FEES

Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES) is a procedure used to assess swallowing function and diagnose swallowing disorders (dysphagia). It involves passing a flexible fiberoptic endoscope through the nose to visualize the anatomy and function of the pharynx and larynx during swallowing. This allows healthcare providers, typically speech-language pathologists or otolaryngologists, to observe any abnormalities or difficulties that may be contributing to the swallowing problem.

Advantages:

  • FEES can be performed at the bedside or in an outpatient setting, making it convenient and accessible for patients.
  • It allows for direct visualization of the pharyngeal and laryngeal anatomy and function during swallowing, providing detailed information that may not be captured by other assessment methods.
  • It does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation, unlike videofluoroscopic swallowing studies.
